Sinking Ship pairs with indie directors for first US deal
Toronto, January 28 th , 2005: Imagine an over-the-hill cop going undercover as a teen skateboarder to crack an evil crime syndicate's smuggling ring. That's the hilarious premise of Switchstance , a short film to be produced by Sinking Ship Productions and created and directed by Toronto indie filmmakers and comedians Adam Brodie and Dave Derewlany .
Switchstance recently won a $100,000 award to produce a short film from The Fuel Experiment (www.thefuelexperiment.tv) in Park City, Utah, a contest run by Fuel TV (A unit of Fox Entertainment Group) for “aspiring action-sports filmmakers”. As Fuel Senior Vice President C.J. Olivares put it, “We're looking to find the next Spike Jonze or Stacy Peralta.” This contest chooses 10 teams from a slew of applicants for funding and then follows the teams as they plan, prep and shoot their films for a 13-episode television series. At the end, the best film wins a $1,000,000 prize to produce a full-length feature film.
Switchstance will be written and directed by Adam Brodie (25) and Dave Derewlany (26). Blair Powers, a producer at Sinking Ship Productions says, “We're really excited about working with Adam and Dave again, their incredible humour and totally original style will make for an amazing film.” Powers had previously produced with the directing pair on “Heatscore” a film that played at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Brodie and Derewlany are equally excited, “It's been difficult to find funding in Canada for the kind of comedies we want to make. The recognition and generosity from everyone at Fuel TV is totally amazing. Now we're setting our sights on that sweet million-dollar prize. Look out America!”
Switchstance will begin shooting this summer in Vancouver, a hotbed of skateboarding culture and film production. Skateboarding's top players are also on board including Geoff Rowley , Ed Templeton , and Canadian Mark Appleyard . These three skaters have won World Championships and three Skater of the Year awards collectively. Scott Pommier , Field Editor for Transworld Skateboarding , is on board as creative consultant and talent liaison for the film.
